Water Lilies

After watching Ovations 3 part series "The Impressionists" I could stand it no longer and asked Zoe to take me to the Botanical gardens where we feasted our eyes on water lilies, water dragons, water birds (including the cutest little babies) and some ducks, as well as other plant life and a waterfall. It was cool and shady and beautiful and I loved it.

We found out that there is handicapped parking inside the front gate, but as the pond I wanted was up the top we parked up outside the university - Sunday, no one was there.

Then we came home and I've been pretending that I'm Monet ever since. I so wish I could take my paints to the water lilies and paint there, but the number of people there would scare me away.

Still, I'm having fun with my big round hogs hair brushes that I'm rechristening "impressionist brushes" and using a lot more paint then usual!

ebay - some numbers...

I've been keeping track over the total number of items in a few categories over the last 3 days and will continue to do so for awhile.

The BOYCOTT doesn't start until tomorrow, but already there is a huge drop in the number of items being offered.

I'm only looking at 4 categories, I do want to have time to continue with my art! But, in the last 3 days here are the numbers...

Art has dropped by 2961
Collectables has dropped by 55291
Computers has dropped 21842
Electronics has dropped 9149

That's a total of 89,243 less items on ebay - and that is before the boycott has even started!

You can't tell me that eBay isn't a little concerned.

I don't have the figures of how many people have shut their stores, but people have, which is another drop in revenue for eBay (and more importantly - the stock holders). Shares have dropped again to 27.79 USD Down 0.12 (0.43%) (and here is a page if you like graphs http://finance.yahoo.com/q/bc?s=EBAY&t=1y )

But ebay says to its shareholders not to worry, that any loss in numbers will be made up for because of greater end fees - oh yes, that will certainly make your users happy, and should drive them away even faster.

Thanks alot ebay. You lost touch in 2004.

Getting excited about Scratchboard

I've loved scratchboard as a medium for a few years now. But lately I've been getting very into it.

You can get amazing realism with it, such as in this Duck

But it also captures emotion in a way that I've never had success with in any other medium.

For example - Licorice (my cat) looking intently at possible prey - who would want to be a mouse?

And this piece, entitled "Loneliness"

And you can get great power and beauty out of it, just leaving it black and white, for a dramatic composition

I still pull out my oils, but for the moment, at least, my scratchboard is always close to hand!

eBay sucks - STRIKE! Feb 18th - 25th 2008

There is a strike planned for eBay on the 18th to the 25th Feb, 2008.

Why?????

After telling us that they were going to drop ebay fees, they put them up again.

Why are we surprised?

After releasing the new figures, they are STILL telling us they have dropped the fees.

Do they think we can't do basic math?

But that's not the worst of it.

As of May this year a seller will only be able to leave a buyer positive feedback. A buyer can still leave any feedback they like.

But this is only the tip of the iceburg, pay attention, this is convoluted.

If you get "dings" in your stars (buyers say postage was slow, for example) your listing won't show in the order it was listed. The more eBay sees you as a "bad" seller, the further they will push you back.

And how do you get to be a bad seller in eBay eyes?

Well, the dings in the stars are one. And how many ebay sellers weren't shocked when they found that people were dinging them on things that they have no control over - such as the postage system?

And then there is feedback itself. If a buyer isn't happy, of course they can leave you negative feedback. But in the past it paid for the buyer to contact you first and see if they could work it out with you, get a refund or something. Now, no, they will go straight to the neg feedback - and THEN force your hand and giving them a refund, even without sending the item back, because, you see, eBay also controls paypal and they have new rules for that as well. We will get to that.

Of course eBay says this system will be better for everyone. They say it will give buyers more confidence in the system. I don't see it happening. The only ones that don't seem to care much about this are the sweat shops. If they get bad feedback they will just make a new ID.

eBay also says that if a buyer doesn't pay they will be kicked off - but they don't tell us how many times they have to not pay before this happens, and in the meantime sellers will be afraid to put in a non paying bidder report - because then they will get a negative feedback and their auctions won't be seen.

But wait, ebay says, after that non paying bidder has been kicked off ebay all the negatives they gave will disappear. eBay - read the above paragraph again. Sellers have no confidence in this, and will be totally unwilling to put up with bad feedback and bad service from ebay for the months it might take you to kick someone off. If that ever happens.

If you are a buyer, or are new to this you might be saying "but surely they don't let buyers who haven't paid leave feedback?" They do - I have one bad feedback, from someone who didn't pay for a $7 packet of pencils. I asked for payment, he refused, I put in a non paying bidder so that I could reclaim my fees, and he left me a negative. eBay refused to do anything about it.....

Ohhhhh - unless I paid them money so that Square Trade could look into the situation. And then they could not guarantee that would have the feedback removed.

And you know what? It seems the situation hasn't changed. When asked if a seller would have the right to challenge unfair feedback the answer is "no - but pay Square Trade and we will look at it...." not do anything about it, just look at it.

Now to paypal. If you have been selling on eBay for less then 12 months you HAVE to use paypal. They don't give you the choice. Because, you see, eBay owns paypal.

If you have been selling for less then 12 months, have less then 100 feedback, sell in a "risky" area such as computer and electronics, then they will HOLD your payment for 21 days - or until the buyer leaves positive feedback.

That means you have to send out the item without getting your money, paypal acting as an escrow service. Who gave them permission to hold our money and act as escrow? Then, if they buyer says something is wrong with the item, paypal repays them AND THERE IS NOTHING FORCING THEM TO SEND THE ITEM BACK! They don't have to prove there is anything wrong, they just have to say that there is.

There are already people saying that they are going to open accounts and buy and leave negative feedback for competitors to get rid of them. They won't care if they get kicked off eventually with that ID - heck, they could even use each one only once!

eBay, I'm not risking my sanity with your insane system. You have bleed me enough.

In case you wondered where I have been.

Went to visit Aunty in hospital. Aunty has pneumonia. A couple of days later I'm in hospital with pneumonia. Apparently I have asthma and should stay away from people with respiratory problems.

Well now they tell me. Only days before my sons wedding and I'm in hospital relearning how to breath.

Did get out for the wedding. Went to the wedding, still sick, unable to talk, but had a quick dance with my darling son. Everyone looked lovely (except for me, of course, but who cares). You can see photos here... www.dreamsofbliss.com

Now I have double vision so I can't paint or draw, and I think I've broken a rib coughing. And I can't even whisper, my voice has up and left me.

Back to the Dr tomorrow.

You probably haven't heard of this - because it hasn't opened yet.

But it's going to be a new online business that will sell anything that you need to market online at deal prices. Ho Hum, so what.

I just joined it, because at the moment it's free to join their affiliate program. Once they start this page will disappear and it was referred to me by someone I trust (the same guy who told me about google ads and auction ads from which I'm now making money by doing practically nothing). So I trust if he says "this is a good thing" that it will be.

And hey it's free, and I can afford that :)

I don't know how much I would buy from them, I don't tend to buy much marketing, but I do occasionally buy things, (domain names and hosting for example). But the thing about this is that it's an affiliate - so at the moment they are giving LIFETIME affiliates to anyone who joins. That means that you tell everyone about it and you get a proportion of anything they buy, and it goes for two tiers!

I'm really looking at my websites differently now. Other showing my art, and maybe occasionally selling it, or getting a commission, they weren't doing much. I don't like ads on my own "special" page (elizasart) but I do a lot of websites, and now I'm looking at how the actual site can make money other then through art sales. It's working and my monthly income is growing. I'm not going to get rich but it certainly pays an extra bill or two per month!

Auctionads is like google ads - only the payout is better. It works by displaying some eBay auctions on your site - small, like the google ads, but the pay out is WONDERFUL. I was dubious, but I've been getting a good payout each month and it continues to increase. They just put the money in paypal, no fuss! And the best thing is, in my opinion, I can taylor the ads to fit my site, so if I've a site on colored pencils I have colored pencil auctions on eBay showing.

The trick is that someone has to not only click, as in google ads, but go on to complete the sale. I thought it would be a very low chance of that, but I've been making money off it, so it actually works. I have both google ads and auction ads and I make about 1/3 more from the auction ads.

Nothing new to show you today because I'm working on three larger works all at once. I've done the background of a commissioned portrait (16x20) - then while thats drying I did the background of a mermaid (12x24) and while that's drying I'm working on a fantasy with a unicorn being ridden by a fairy.

It's all taking time. Mostly drying time!

Pastel workshop

I attended a still life workshop yesterday which taught me a lot - it taught me that I don't like still life and that most of the "teachers" don't know as much as I know. ARGH!!! I sat there saying "isn't there anything you want to say about it?" and she would reply "it's very good!" and I'd say "isn't there anything you can critic?" and she would reply "no, not yet" and I'd think (although I didn't say it) "then why did I pay $40 for this?"

I've finally taken the plunge with pastels. I've been avoiding them for years, telling myself that I didn't like the feeling of them on my fingers. The truth is that I had tried them once before for life drawing, and didn't like the feeling - but also made such a muddy mess that I just thought that I was hopeless.

Mungo Pastels. They are cheap and nasty and horrible to use.

But I have some nice ones now and wow the difference!!!

I have to go watch "Firefly" now. :)

Muffet and Norman have discovered each other and it's love at first nibble. Both could move away if they wanted, but they are happy to stay with each other and kiss through the cage. I took Norman out, but he wanted to stand on Muffets back and she didn't like that
